About Katherine Van

Katherine Van Drie is a multi-media artist whose works encompass, among other things, textiles, ceramics and sculpture. Katherine was born in Great Britain, and moved to the United States in 1991. Drawing on her dual identity as both a British and American citizen, Katherine’s work explores questions about identity, domesticity, and material consumption, and how these are subsequently reflected in the spaces we inhabit.

Katherine completed her BFA at Indiana University Northwest, where she was recipient of an Undergraduate Research Grant.

Katherine explains her work by saying, “I’ve Been Told (i) is inspired by an Instagram post in which a woman recounts conversations with her family at a reunion. She describes personal comments made about her weight gain after her recovery from long term restricting. Her follower’s empathetic response is “I’ve been told several times I’d be so pretty if I lost weight.” This piece seeks to provoke awareness and discussion about the complicated nature of eating disorders and the communication and social difficulties often associated with them.”
